Head, Assessment Design for Programme Development

You will be responsible for technical and strategic leadership of the organisations programme-level changes to assessment (formative and summative), working in conjunction with Programme Heads and senior Assessment Division colleagues.
This will entail creating an annual set of priorities to guide the design and sign-off of individual assessment tasks, ensuring they align to the learning objectives of the programmes, and take account of the learner experience.
You will need to respond to student and schools’ data and take responsibility for ensuring you follow through in curriculum review to issues raised from the collated information. It will be your responsibility to ensure timely and robust decision-making and sign-off of proposed changes to assessment instruments.
In addition, create a community of professional assessment practice and share knowledge, explore and beta test innovations, and grow professional capacity.
- A primary internal departmental stakeholder is the Assessment Division, but the role will also interact with Professional Development, Research, and world schools to understand the overall impact of the learner and school experience of assessment design in learning and teaching.
- The post holder works with Programme Heads, Assessment Research Design team, and individual Curriculum Managers and Subject Managers across programmes.
- Recommend overall balance of assessment design and innovations in accordance with learning and teaching strategic goals for each programme.
- Decide the priority actions from data each session relating to the work of curriculum design upstream.
- Identify and synthesise the most current and relevant research on assessment in teaching and learning and create processes for it to inform the curriculum review cycle.
- Decide the timing and extent of collaboration with other departments within to ensure that the curriculum review standards and practices, as well as the assessment principles and procedures, are carefully followed.
- Determine priorities in everyday workload to deal efficiently and effectively with the demands of curriculum review and document production, including planning a schedule to accommodate agreed timelines.
- Sign off changes in assessments on behalf of the Chief Officer Learning and Teaching and maintain systems and formal accountability in the Division for changes to assessment design.
1. Curriculum design
- Provide a learning and teaching oriented assessment ‘roadmap’ for each programme that supports the range of learning, takes into account future directions of learning environments, and enhances the student experience.
- Ensure that changes at subject or group level happen ‘by design’ and deliver the overall outcomes in the wider work plan for programme changes, for instance student workload.
- Agree and deliver against priority interventions or changes to assessments after each session on the basis of student and school data.
- Create (with Assessment colleagues) clear guidelines and policies to balance competing needs in assessment design and delivery (cost, reliability, security, authenticity and validity among others).
2. Educational leadership and professional development
- Keep abreast of research and major developments in the field of assessment design and learner evaluation, at developmentally appropriate levels, and in role related areas, in order to ensure the intellectual rigour and depth of designated components.
- Plan and lead a process that socialises the recommendations for the scope and direction of curriculum development to ensure understanding, engagement and uptake.
- Cascade current best practice in assessment design to Learning and Teaching colleagues
- Keep abreast of the relationships between assessment, cognitive knowledge and skills development, teaching and learning.
- Create user-friendly guides, templates/toolkits for teams to use in the process of curriculum development that help ensure consistency of production.
3. Research and analysis
- Recommend appropriate longer-term directions for the scope of innovation of level assessments, in accordance the mission of the organisation, on the basis of cutting edge research.
- Identify and synthesise the most current and relevant research to guide whole programme assessment design and be shared with internal staff.
- Synthesise and create action plans from assessment data from school implementation and use it coherently in the curriculum review process to improve assessment design.
- Work in close collaboration with the Assessment Research Design team to draw together ‘upstream’ and whole programme design principles (the focus of this role) and robust assessment delivery (validity, reliability, authenticity) in line with leading thinking in the field.
- Preferably a relevant PhD level qualification (ideally with a focus on assessment for learning, learning sciences and curriculum design, or similar) or Masters level with relevant experience will be considered.
- Evidence of professional impact with international recognition for expertise and leadership in assessment for learning or a closely related field.
- A demonstrable track record of creating assessments/ assessment models that support learning and that can balance high-stakes summative assessments with other kinds of assessment.
- Proven track record of delivering scalable assessment models in curriculum development ideally at an international level.
- Excellent people skills and ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences.
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills, with meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent writing skills in English, which is the working language of the organization.
- The ability to lead in a context of competing needs and priorities using influencing skills and to work within a team and to foster a collaborative environment.
- Competency in using standard Office software.
- A high level of digital literacy.
- The ability to manage multiple projects to agreed timelines.
- Ability to present effectively for a variety of audiences and purposes.
- Fluent/Business Level English required - French or Spanish or other languages is a plus.
